Susan Richman

As a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in private practice in Bethesda, MD, I work with adults who are struggling with their personal relationships or experiencing symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression. I offer counseling services for individuals, couples, parents and groups in a warm and supportive environment.

I strive to develop an honest, open and trusting relationship wherein a client feels safe and understood, and able to express themselves without fear of judgment. I encourage my clients to face what they find most uncomfortable: change. Together, we identify goals and explore strategies for reaching those goals. In this way, I help my clients learn to manage any challenge that comes their way.

I earned my Masters Degree, as well as a Post-Masters Certificate, in Clinical Community Counseling from Johns Hopkins University. Prior to going into private practice, I worked at the Montgomery County Commission for Women Counseling and Career Center in Rockville, MD, counseling adult women and men experiencing life and career transitions. In that capacity, I worked extensively with people going through divorce and separation, as well as with victims of domestic abuse. I also provided supportive counseling to individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and anger management problems. While at the Commission for Women, I presented workshops on Building Blocks to Starting Over and led Separation and Divorce Support groups. I also presented a workshop on “Strategies for Success After College” at both the Commission and Marymount University.

My counseling experience also included several years working with children and adolescents in elementary, middle and high school. I served as a school counselor in both private and public schools in Montgomery County. In my private practice, I see men and women individually, as couples and in groups. Most of my clients are experiencing relationship difficulties with family members and/or in their intimate relationships. I especially enjoy working with parents on a wide range of issues including the transition to parenthood, discipline techniques, differing parenting styles and balancing home and career.

I also have been successful in helping teenagers and their parents manage the challenges of adolescence. I have a special interest in and experience working with parents on a wide range of family issues. I offer parenting consulting services to individuals and couples, and run parenting education and support groups both in my office, and at off-site locations. As the host of a parenting workshop titled “Managing Toddler Meltdowns” at Kidville in Bethesda, MD, I was invited to appear on Channel 8’s “Let’s Talk Live” (watch it here). My parenting tips for managing toddler meltdowns were also mentioned in the Huffington Post on March 27, 2012.

Additional Background

I graduated from Tufts University with a B.A. in Economics and went on to earn a Master of Business Administration from the Thunderbird School of Global Management. I worked for many years in international business in Washington, DC before taking on a more demanding but rewarding position as a stay-at-home mom to three children. This priceless personal experience, along with my earlier career in global business, impact my ability to successfully connect with, listen to and understand what my clients bring into our counseling sessions. The unique combination of education, training, work and life experiences has prepared me for helping others navigate a wide range of challenges and transitions.
